01 — Overview

History & background.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is the product of one of the most complex industrial collaborations in military aviation history. Developed jointly by the UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain through a consortium structure that required every major component to be built in proportion to each nation’s financial contribution, the Typhoon was shaped as much by politics as by aerodynamics. The result, however, is a formidable air superiority fighter with exceptional performance in the air-to-air role.

The Typhoon’s defining aerodynamic characteristic is its delta wing combined with a close-coupled canard forewing — a configuration that provides superb high-angle-of-attack performance and agility at the cost of inherent longitudinal instability. The fly-by-wire system corrects for this instability 40 times per second. Combined with a thrust-to-weight ratio exceeding 1.0 and the ability to supercruise (sustain supersonic flight without afterburner) at approximately Mach 1.5, the Typhoon is arguably the best pure air-to-air fighter in European service.

The Typhoon entered service in 2003 and has been progressively enhanced through a series of tranches. Tranche 3 aircraft include the CAPTOR-E AESA radar, improved air-to-ground weapons integration (Brimstone, Storm Shadow, Paveway IV), and an electronic warfare suite that approaches the Rafale’s SPECTRA system in capability. Export customers include Saudi Arabia, Austria, Kuwait, Qatar, and Spain, with ongoing competition for contracts in Colombia, Finland (lost to F-35), and India.

04 — Questions

Frequently asked about Eurofighter Typhoon.

What is supercruise and does the Typhoon have it?+
Supercruise is the ability to sustain supersonic flight without using the fuel-intensive afterburner. The Typhoon can supercruise at approximately Mach 1.5 in clean configuration (no external weapons) — one of only a handful of operational fighters with this capability, alongside the F-22 Raptor.
How does the Eurofighter Typhoon compare to the Dassault Rafale?+
In air-to-air combat the Typhoon is generally considered superior, with better supercruise performance and kinematics. In the ground attack role the Rafale has a more mature weapons integration and a more capable electronic warfare suite. The two aircraft have competed directly for export contracts with both winning significant orders.
What countries fly the Eurofighter Typhoon?+
The Typhoon is operated by the UK RAF, German Luftwaffe, Italian Aeronautica Militare, Spanish Ejército del Aire, Saudi Arabian Royal Air Force, Austrian Air Force, Kuwaiti Air Force, and Qatari Emiri Air Force, with additional orders from other nations.
